This past weekend a few of us boys got together to do some skimboarding in Port Renfrew in preparation for the Sub Zero Skim Jam on March 26th! The crew consisted of Byron ‘Tron’ Shultz (who was celebrating his birthday on Saturday!), Brennan Wolfe, Jason Harper, Jesse Gibson, Jeff Zamluk and myself… It was the typical scene on our way to Renfrew, the boys and I were skeptical whether or not the waves were going to be going off but our spirits were still high! When we eventually rounded the bend at the good ol’ West Coast Java stand (that I’ve never actually seen open) at the Pacheedaht Native Reserve we saw the most perfect surf waves rolling in over the sandy hill. As usual, we all screamed like girls… Or at least I did. The waves were phenomenal, they were coming in perfect sets and breaking about 20 feet off shore at about chest to head high. In true Renfrew form they were still quite difficult to play with on skimboards though, typically the shore break would form a trough that we would have to fight with but we still managed to catch ourselves some waves! We ended up skimboarding and surfing for a total of about 5 hours. For about an hour of the session I managed to strap my GoPro HD camera to my head (secured underneath my wetsuit hood) and film a rides and airs, which I thought would turn out way cooler. Turns out that wrap footage and air footage isn’t all that impressive unless you’re watching from a distance!! Who would have guessed! I did however manage to attach the camera to my surfboard, which I had a custom fin-box mounted in the nose of the board by the boys at Barracuda Surfboards and got some cool footage with the GoPro that way.
Overall, once again it was a successful mission out to Port Renfrew! Everyone left stoked and exhausted.
